FOREWORD.
The story of Vanguard Lodge follows very slowly the story of the Province insofar as it came into existence at a time there was a great demand for Freemasonry. Now many Lodges are struggling for their very existence. The Founders had high expectations and for many years it flourished because of the enthusiasm of its senior members. That enthusiasm still exists and I commend the efforts of those members who are anxious to preserve the identity of Vanguard Lodge. I hope their efforts meet with the success they deserve.

HISTORY OF THE LODGE,
Compiled by VV.Bro.R.Small.P.Pr.S.G.D.
NAMING OF THE LODGE
The Lodge was originally to be "Onward Lodge", but as that name was already in use in Masonic West Lancs..Grand Lodge offered the names of "Queen Elizabeth', "Hallmark" & "Vanguard", which likewise suggests leader. The prime mover behind the next new Lodge in Preston was Harry Watson, who was a Member of many East Lancashire Lodges and also the Lodge of Peace and Unity. He quickly began a series of meetings with potential Founders in the Preston area, these being held in Stanley Crookall's joiners offices. Dr. John Hopkinson's home, and William Thew"s printing works. Eventually there were 21 petitioners, with 13 coming from Preston Lodges and 5 from other West Lancs, plus one each from Arlecdon Lodge No. 1660 in Frizington (Cumberland and Westmorland).Charity Lodge No.3342 in Rochdale (East Lancs). Severn Lodge No.5583 in Stourport (Worcs). The petition was signed in Ribbleton Lodge No.6386 at its May meeting and the consecration took place at the Victoria & Station Hotel on the 19th November 1952. with a good Provincial turnout of William Hannay, Pr.G.M. with his Deputy and Wardens, as well as Ashton Davies. A.Pr.G.M.. In total 140 brethren saw Harry Watson installed as the first Master, and John Carpenter's (Pr.G.Chap) address saying that he expected ""Vanguard will be in the Van'" of carrying the Masonic message into a sometime hostile world and added the comment that the brethren will doubtless "have heard lately and read many criticisms of Freemasonry, much of which is biased or false."
Copy of the Petition for a New Lodge.
To the Most Worshipful The Grand Master of the United Fraternity of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of
England.
We, the undersigned being regularly registered Master Masons of the Lodges mentioned against our respective names, having the prosperity of the Craft at heart, are anxious to exert our best endeavours to promote and diffuse the genuine principles of the art: and. for the convenience of our respective dwellings and other good reasons, we are desirous of forming a new Lodge to be named. -
"The Vanguard Lodge".
In consequence of this desire, we pray for constitution, empowering us to meet as a regular Lodge, at Ribbleton Masonic Temple, Greenlands Grove, Ribbleton Ave. Preston. On the third Tuesday of each month from September to June, and there to discharge the duties of Masonry, in a constitutional manner, according to the forms of the Order and the laws of the Grand Lodge: we have nominated and recommend Brother Harry Watson who has served the office of Warden in a Regular Lodge to be the first Master. Brother William Greenhalgh Battersby to be the first Senior Warden, Brother John Jackson to be the first Junior Warden, of the said Lodge.
Should the Prayer of this Petition be granted, we promise strict Obedience to the commands of the Grand Master and the laws and Regulations of the Grand Lodge.

.
Brethren, we are privileged to be here today, to take our part in consecrating a new Masonic Lodge because a Consecration ceremony is one which every Mason should witness, but which very many are never able to do. We are united in our desire that the Lodge, now to be consecrated, shall become a live and happy centre of Masonic teaching and activity: and we soon join in prayer to Almighty God that He will bestow His rich blessings upon it: and that He will guide and direct its members in building up a good Lodge tradition. We believe, as Masons that the Most High will hear our prayer: but let it not be thought by any way that the Founders can then sit back and expect God to do the work. In the fulfilling of God's purpose there must be partnership between God and man. between the Great Architect and His Craftsmen.
What is Gods purpose for freemasonry in the world ? What does he want it to do ? For the answer to these questions let us go back into its history. Freemasons throughout the centuries have not proclaimed abroad their doings. Their work has not been so much in outward manifestation, but rather in the inner motives of men's lives; in the mutual help and encouragement of brethren; in setting forth high and noble ideals of conduct. The world does not realise how much it owes to generations of Freemasons who have built well and truly into the fabric of our national life. It would have been a much poorer and colder world without Freemasonry.
We are proud of the ancient landmarks of the Order; proud that its roots go back into antiquity, and that its principles have stood firm and strong in many an age of tailing principles and uncertain standards. Brethren we are right to be proud and grateful for this noble heritage into which we are privileged to enter. But having turned our eyes to the past let us look around at the present and forward to the future. What part has Freemasonry to play in the world to¬day ? Can we rest on our laurels, content with the present state of the world ? Are there no uncertain standards and failing principles to-day; no intruders and cowans to Masonry who would defile and destroy the noble temples of morality and goodness which our brethren have set up?
Are the evil forces of greed, selfishness and dishonesty any less active than they formerly were in attacking the weak and defenceless ? Is there no need of brotherly love and relief, of level conduct and square dealing in these days ?
My brethren, if we are increasing the number of Lodges: if we are initiating more Good men and true into Masonry, is it not that we might strengthen our Masonic power to resist the evil in the world and establish the good ? There is very much for us to enjoy: much good companionship in Freemasonry, hut these are only incidental, they are the bonus which is awarded for the right fulfilment of our main purpose.
We have lately heard and read many criticisms of Freemasonry, much of which is biased or false. We shall disprove it best by not answering back, not by argument, but by demonstrating in our lives our high masonic principles of service to God and man. Let us go forward living up to our masonic teaching, regularly showing that a Freemason is indeed one to whom the burdened heart may pour forth its sorrow, to whom the distressed may prefer their suit, whose hand is guided by justice and whose heart is expanded by benevolence. We as individual masons, and through our Lodges, can do very much to maintain the high traditions of our ancient fraternity and to prosper the art. We can. with divine help, build a better and happier world.
The Lodge we are consecrating to-day is to be named "Vanguard Lodge." a name to inspire one when we think of our great Masonic task against evil and hostile forces. Even Lodge has a place in this fight, but surely "Vanguard " will be in the van. Let there be no desire for easy enjoyment of the reputation we inherit, and no "let up" in Masonic effort: but rather the eagerness of a young Lodge to lead in the drive for a better and kinder world, and to go forward to greater achievements in the days to come. Brethren, we are informed that Her Majesty's battleship "Vanguard" is at this very hour steering her way northward, in constant darkness, to face the storms and hazards of the arctic. We have reason to believe that she is manned by a well-trained and loyal crew of British sailors, ready to obey the command of a captain who knows the aim and purpose of the voyage, and who is skilled in the art of navigation, able to achieve his task and bring back the noble vessel safely to Harbour. May this new "Vanguard Lodge" setting out upon its voyage into an unknown future, with its inevitable difficulties and trials which the eye of man cannot foresee: sometimes fighting storms, sometimes in danger of lying becalmed and making no headway: may this Lodge ever be manned by a loyal crew: trained in its Masonic Duties, ready and willing to obey the will of its divine Commander, and determined to carry out fully the tasks which shall be assigned to it. God speed you on your way. So mote it be.

Historical Notes Regarding the Lodge.
At the first Lodge meeting Edward Kinsley and William Hind were successfully balloted for, and the former immediately initiated. Additionally Capt. Bill Pollard stationed at Fulwood Barracks and of Tawngpeng Lodge No. 1326 (S.C.) and Dacca Lodge No. 3454 (of Dacca. East Bengal). John Crookall of Mimico Lodge No.369 in Canada, and John Lund of Preston Guild Lodge No 4408 in Preston were successfully balloted for as joining members. John Crookall had to then take an obligation of allegiance, because he had been initiated into a Lodge not under the jurisdiction of the United Grand Lodge .
In February 1953 there was a double passing ceremony of the first two initiates W.Waddilove & J.Kay and then in March the Twenty lodge members were joined by Forty visitors. The reason was that brethren from Farnworth Lodge No.5301, one of the Master's former Lodges, had come to take over the offices for Edward Kinley's raising, and with twenty-one of them in total the number of attendees naturally swelled. The Farnworth brethren were to visit en masse on another two occasions.
The scrutiny committee met on 11th August 1953 to interview 6 candidates, all of whom were accepted, and in October the first of several double ceremonies took place, this time with 2 candidates each for passing and initiation. In fact double ceremonies were to continue for 12 years, such was the interest in becoming members of the Lodge.
It is not possible to assess the thoughts and ideas of our founders as the records of their meetings, prior to the Consecration are lost. In fact no records of committee meetings were kept for the first twelve months of existence. In October of 1953 the new Secretary William Thew sought permission to purchase a book for that purpose, even then very little information can be gleaned from these as they are mostly one-liners giving the barest of information.
The current format of the Lodge Circular was designed by Bro.E.Mounsey & was first used on the 1s' Anniversary meeting on 17th November 1953.
In May 1954, 37 of the members had a coach trip to Blackpool for dinner at 6-45p.m. and then on to the Tower Circus. Even as early as 1955 consideration was given to moving the meetings to Saul Street but this move was discarded. In 1961 the June meeting was discontinued.
Over the next three years the Lodge continued with it's furnishings in which tracing boards and banner were presented and dedicated, a junior practice evening was also implemented. In November 1957 the new and illuminated tracing boards were formally switched on by W/Bro.David Davies, Chairman of the Preston Group, who also unveiled and dedicated the new Lodge Banner. The latter had been donated to the Lodge by the Tyler, John Kay, in memory of his father who had died recently, the design of which incorporated the square and compasses prominently displayed on a pale blue background, with the words "Province of Lancashire Western Division". By March 1959 Vanguard had grown to the extent that 50 members attended the Lodge meeting for the first time, and at the installation meeting in I960 Edward Kinley, first initiate, became the Master of the Lodge, with Thomas Ward. D.Pr.G.M.. and Sir Thomas Hargreaves A.P.G.M. present.
On 15th January 1963 a passing ceremony had to be postponed, because the severe frosts burst the radiators, and pipes. The 34 brethren and 10 visitors endured the brief opening and closing, with a brief dispatch of business, attired in Wellingtons, overcoats and thick gloves, the aprons being worn on top of the overcoats!
In February 1964 a special meeting was called to discuss rent rises proposed by Ribhleton Lodge and the Vanguard Lodge building fund , loan to be discontinued and members were asked to give up their loan ' of five pounds per member. Only two of the Brethren requested that their loan be refunded. In that year the Installation Banquet moved from the Victoria and Station Hotel - where it had been held since the consecration - to Saul Street, also in March of that year saw the initiation fees increased from 23 to 35 guineas and country members from 1'/: to 2 guineas, it was also agreed that 6 W.M's in order of seniority of Lodges be invited to future installations and also in that year a regular sick visitor was appointed. The final figure for the Lodge Donation to the R.M.I.G. Festival came to £989 exactly.
On 16th February 1965 the Lodge members stood in Silence in memory of Bro.Winston Churchill.
A special meeting in June of 1967 was held to discuss termination of tenancy arrangements at Ribbleton Lodge. This was agreed by 39 votes to 3 that we move to Saul Street, and all liquid stock be divided between elderly brethren of the Lodge.
In spite of this move the candidates were still coming forward regularly. In October 1967. however, the brethren voted unanimously to move to Saul Street, and met there for the first time the following month. The move attracted more visitors. At the first installation in the new venue the attendance topped over 100 for the first time. 45 members and 56 visitors.
October 1968 saw the introduction of the extended working tools and charge in the second degree. A heavy maul was presented to the Lodge by W.Bro.W.Conway.
March 1969 saw the formation of the Vanguard Benevolent Fund whose aim was to provide immediate relief for Lodge members and their dependants. The Benevolent Committee was empowered to offer financial help to any pensioner member in view of the proposed increase in subscriptions . The following few years saw various items of furniture donated to the Lodge. A new poinard was presented by Bro.G.Howson, Ballot boxes and a lectern were made by W/Bro.H.Rigby. A grave sheet was also presented by W/Bro.W.Wiggins.W/Bro.ll.Hayhurst asked if he could present a Bible to each Master on Installation.
In December 1971 Clifford Haworth was initiated in style, with an explanation of the 1st degree Tracing Board by Harry Hayhurst. In the following month John Lund added the 2nd degree Tracing Board explanation after a double passing ceremony.
In 1975 the Ladies Evening was moved from the Cliffs Hotel, Blackpool -where it had been held since the formation of the Lodge. It was left to the Masters for choice of venue. In March 1976 the Treasurer reported that due to rapidly rising costs the Lodge finances would just about break even, therefore a rise in subscriptions was required. Sept. 1976 saw exclusion procedures initiated against 7 members for non-payment of subs, and £200 had to be transferred from the investment account to top up the Lodge account. Also in 1976 at the age of 87 W/Bro.W.Howson decided to relinquish the office of Chaplain after many years of service, also at this time dialogue with Winckley Lodge re-a joint festive board took place. Also in 1976 the first of many Lectures was given.
The lodge held its inaugural Old English Night on 19th April 1977. and has enjoyed many such events since.
For its 25th anniversary in November 1977 there was no fanfare of trumpets, but it had to be noted that a special cake in the shape of a Battleship had been prepared for the festive board.
The lodge went quietly about its business, presenting a Grand Lodge certificate to George Hamilton and initiating Ronald Foster. In 1979 a discussion took place on forming a Fellowship for Lodge widows & retired masons. The Preston Masonic Temple was in a position to give a rebate of £35 to each Lodge. In 1981 W/Bro.J.G.Lund was appointed Vice Chairman of the Preston Group.
A New I. P.M.collar was presented to the Lodge by W/Bro.J.F.Walmsley.
The first of many Degree Demonstations was carried out by Junior Brethren in 1985.
In Nov. 1981 the Secretary was asked to write to Masonic Hall manager requesting a larger room for our junior practice meetings as up to 18 members were attending. However, as the lodge was entering a leaner period with fewer candidates, lectures appeared more often on the circulars. Bro Ernie Cocker of Lodge 3493 presented the working tools of an operative stonemason as applied to P1 and 2nd working tools at 2 meetings in 1982, whilst W/Bro. Alan Robinson covered many items on his frequent visits, including banners. Churches and lighthouses. The junior brethren were entrusted with several Demonstration degree ceremonies, and the Jubilee Lodge lecture team presented the P1 and 2"d degree to great acclaim.
In January 1984 Bill Pollard (of Dacca) Celebrated 50 years in Masonry, but unfortunately as he had held Honorary Membership for some considerable time he did not qualify for Provincial recognition so the Lodge presented him with a certificate and gift from the last remaining Founder, Bill Conway,(who later sadly died in July 1994). Once again Bro.E.Cocker presented all 3 sets of Working Tools in 1990.
W/Bro.John Lund who had joined Vanguard less than a year after being initiated and had been Preston Group Secretary for a number of years, also celebrated his 50 years in April 1992 with full Provincial recognition and ceremony with W.Bro.Tom Blackburn A.Pr.G.M. and the Provincial D.C. W.Bro.Peter Saunders.Pr.J.G.W. attending along with 80 other brethren. Also in 1992 the Lodge funds again became stretched when a levy was imposed for the refurbishment of the Ballroom, when the sum of £1.240 had to be found. The Offices of Almoner and Charity Steward were implemented and W/Bro.S.N.Rigby very kindly donated the Collars and Jewels.
A joint festive board followed the December Lodge meeting of 1994 with Winckley Lodge, which was a great success and has continued to be so these past years. In November 1996 the Lodge were given a very interesting Lecture by the Preston Masonic Study Circle on the "The Grand Charity" by W/Bro.C.P.Wright D.Pr.G.M.
W/Bro. John Lund was made an Honorary member in February 1997, but still participated actively in ceremonies, such as delivering the traditional history to brethren in the same year. This year also saw the first Past Master, Ronald Holt, Master in 1977. re-installed in the Masters chair. This was followed by three previous Masters being re-installed in the Masters Chair. Robert Poole. Ross Procter and John Medcalf who were Masters 1984,1994 and 1995 respectively.
In the year of 2000 the May meeting was discontinued. In 2002 W.Bro. Stan Rigby took up the Office of Preston Group Secretary. During the 50 years a high quality of Ceremony has been achieved and maintained with seriously hard work done in many meetings as evidenced by :-
40 Double First Degree
56 First Degree
40 Double Second Degree
47 Second Degree
37 Double Third Degree
60 Third Degree
Demonstration Degree Ceremonies were carried out in the later years by Junior Brethren and Officers in post.
Many, and regularly. Explanations of Tracing Boards and Grand Lodge Certificates were given by Lodge Members and visiting Brethren, notably including W.Bros C.Cornwell, J.B.Morris, W.A.Robinson and R.E.Melrose.
As regards to the current future of Vanguard Lodge No.7170 at around 2002 it was realized it was not feasible to carry on the Lodge in its present situation and was suggested we should seek . amalgamation with other Lodges who were compatable and in a similar postion. It was decided to try to keep it in the family and to this end Fraternity Lodge No.4072, Broughton Lodge No.5437" and Ribbleton Lodge No.6386 were approached. W.Bros.R.L.Holt, R.J.Poole and Bro.P.E.Sorsby were appointed as Lodge representatives. Unfortunately Ribbleton decided the time was not quite right for them and declined. Talks continued with the three Lodges who felt happy and comfortable with each other. A Meeting with the Prov. Grand. Secretary then took place who laid , out a programme of events leading up to a timetable being drawn up. ; This established the date of the amalgamation taking into account the November Installation meeting of Fraternity Lodge. On which date we would become joining members of Fraternity Lodge. A Facilitator was assigned to the delegation to steer them through the various stages of amalgamation. This fell on W.Bro.D.J. Winder. Meanwhile the September meeting of Vanguard Lodge saw W.Bro.R.L.Holt installed as Master for the 3rd time. This would prove to be the shortest ever tenure of this office in the Lodge, a matter of Two months.
On Tuesday the 16lh November 2004 W.Bro.R.L.Holt. surrendered the Warrant of the Lodge to the Asst. Prov.Grd. Master for enfacement.
The amalgamation meeting of all three Lodges is to be held on Thursday 24th February 2005. When the Prov.Grand Master and his Team will take part.
Subscriptions.
The Founders Fee was Ten Guineas. It appears that the Initial Subscription for Members was Three guineas and One guinea for Country Members.
The first substantial change was on April Ist 1958. This being Four guineas and One and a Half guineas respectively, and having to be approved by the M.W. Grand Master and signed by W/Bro.J.W.Stubbs the Grand Secretary, also agreed by the Rt. Prov. Grand Master countersigned by the Prov. Grand Secretary.
The next increase was in April l964 when Subs, went to Five and Two guineas, this having to be approved by the Prov. Grand Secretary and confirmed in open Lodge. ( incidentally at that meeting the current
Treasurer W/Bro.R..J.Poole, was initiated ). In 1971 guineas changed to pounds. Subscriptions steadly increased from £7.00 to £95.00 in 1992. 1993 saw a sharp rise to £120.00, then more constant increases to the Millennium level of £150.00. The fee in 2002 being £156.00 (including meals). In 2004 the lodge fee was increased to £163.00.
